It seems like one of the major reasons is that they just wanted to improve their video search. With youtube included in the search results people might actually start using the google video search.

Google didn’t have to buy YouTube to include them in the search. They could index it on their own, just like they do with textual sites.

Searching video is completely different than searching for text web pages. The title and description of the video are the only on page factors that Google can use to determine relevance in a search. By having direct access to this data they can provide more thorough results.
